The 5 steps towards driving competence

Passing your driving test isn't just receiving a certificate and hearing ‘well done' – It's a turning point that grants you a whole new degree of freedom and independence.

Whether you're a complete beginner to driving not sure where or how to start or a current learner looking for some hints on that push to the test day, you've come to the right place. Here you will find step-by-step advice on your journey to passing, from how many of my driving lessons in Hungerford you may need to the next steps after you pass.

Provisional driving licence

Step 1 Getting Lesson-Ready

First and foremost, you need to obtain a provisional license. You can get yours by applying online, or by completing a D1 application form available at most post offices.

You need to be able to read a standard license plate from a distance of 20 metres to qualify for lessons. If you are not able to, it may be time for you to visit the opticians and enquire about a pair of driving glasses.

Step 2 Mastering the Essentials

The national average is 45 hours of professional instruction, which you may be able to bring down (Saving money in the process) by practicing with a qualified supervisor (Anybody over 21 years of age who has held a full license for 3+ years).

You will need to be insured on the vehicle you get additional practice in – Learner insurance is generally fairly cheap, so be sure to shop around for a good deal.

Please note that this is just a guideline. Everybody learns and drives differently, so it may take you more time or less time to be test-ready. For consistent progress, I recommend you aim for at least 2 hours of lessons per week.

Step 3 Passing your Theory Test

You cannot book your practical test until you have booked your theory test, so I recommend you get this done as soon as possible. Theory test certificates are valid for 2 years, which gives you plenty of time to focus on your practical after you pass.

The theory test has a way of catching people out – Don't believe those who say it's easy, or that they passed without revising! I recommend you download a theory test revision app and purchase a current copy of the Highway Code to remain up to date.

Step 4 Preparing for Test Day

The test centre doesn't provide a car, you will need to provide your own. This could be my Vauxhall Corsa, a friend's car or a family member's car (With the proper insurance) – The choice is up to you, but it's important you take the test in the car you feel most familiar with. If a friend has been supplementing your lessons as a qualified supervisor and you feel you prefer their car, no hard feelings – If you feel it maximises your chances of passing, use it.

As the test approaches, we will spend some time getting familiar with the roads surrounding your test centre, covering the potential test routes and putting everything together with some mock tests. This will help you feel more confident and comfortable on the big day.

Step 5 Congratulations!

Now that you've a road-legal driver you should sort out your car insurance. As a new driver, you can expect higher-than-normal premiums, so make sure you compare quotes from different insurers.

If you're not being insured on a family member's or partner's car, consider your options for a first car. Consider:

- Safety or convenience features like anti-lock brakes, traction control and parking cameras.
- Reliability and ease of maintenance – A more common car means readily-available replacement parts and cheaper visits to the garage.
- Size and manoeuvrability, especially if you know you will be driving or parking in cities. Compact cars and hatchbacks also generally offer better mileage and are more affordable.
- Overall fuel efficiency

Remember that learning never stops – Consider taking motorway driving lessons for additional confidence and skills.

He taught my partner to learn and assisted him in his test, communication was amazing throughout booking, with very fair prices considering my partner had a previous ban therefore had to have a longer test yet he still assisted us in the best possible way and in which my partner passed his driving test!
